HUNGRY FOR CHANGE: Food, Ethics & Sustainability Thursdays, Sept. 29 through Nov. 10 -- 7:00 pm at Stillwaters (26059 Barber Cut Off Road) This is the NEWEST Northwest Earth Institute Sustainability Discussion Course. Food is a global industry with huge impacts on our environment. This course describes the complexities of producing our food and the relationship to the sustainability of the planet. It is more global in approach than the "Menu for the Future" class. The cost includes your discussion book Pre-register at 360-297-1226 by Sept. 26. COST: $40/one person or $50/household if you share a book (2011 members get a discount) CHOICES FOR SUSTAINABLE LIVING • To explore the meaning of sustainability. A nine-session course covering these topics: * A Call to Sustainability * Ecological Principles * Sustainable Communities * Sustainable Business and Economy * Sustainable Food * Sustainable Buying * Sustainable Living * Visions of Sustainability DISCOVERING A SENSE OF PLACE • To understand the meaning of a bioregional perspective, and what it would mean to develop one. An eight-session course covering these topics: * A Sense of Place * Responsibility to Place * Knowing Your Bioregion * Living in Place * Mapping Your Bioregion * Community * Empowerment VOLUNTARY SIMPLICITY • To understand the meaning of voluntary simplicity. An five-session course covering these topics: * The Meaning of Simplicity * Living More with Less * Your Money or Your Life * Do You Have the Time? * How Much is Enough * Swimming Against the Tide * The Practice of Simplicity DEEP ECOLOGY& RELATED TOPICS • To understand the meaning of deep ecology. • To learn how personal values affect the way we view and treat the earth. An eight-session course covering these topics: * Deep Ecology * The Gaia Hypothesis HEALTHY CHILDREN – HEALTHY PLANET • To understand the pervasive effects of advertising, media, and our consumer culture can influence a child’s view of the world. An eight-session course covering these topics: *Cultural Pressures *Family Rituals and Celebrations *Advertising *Food and Health *Time and Creativity *Technology and the Media *Exploring Nature Classes are held on various evenings, from 7 – 9 pm, at Stillwaters.
